UJ DFC Civil Engineering Forum Company Presentations
Invitation to host Company Civil Engineering Presentation at the University of Johannesburg’s DFC Civil Engineering Technology Department
The University of Johannesburg’s’ Civil Engineering Forum is a student representative body within the University’s Civil Engineering Department that caters to the needs of all Civil Engineering Technology students. The forum is a voluntary organisation that aims to expose students to industry and give companies a platform to market themselves amongst students.
The Forum, on a monthly basis, hosts company presentations aimed at exposing students to the many options available in the engineering sector e.g. Consulting and Contracting. The presentations seek to bridge the gap between theory and practical and expose students to the multi-disciplinary industry of Civil Engineering. Many of our 1st year students don’t fully understand Civil Engineering in its entirety with some of the senior students expecting high salaries once complete because of the skills shortage in the sector. Through presentations by companies like yours, we hope to discuss a few of the following aspects students are curious about on our campus:-
-
Difference between Contracting and Consulting.
-
Different sectors of Civil Engineering (Structures, Transport, Geotech etc.)
-
Engineers, technologists and technicians. (responsibilities of each and professional registration)
-
Mentorship.
-
What prospective employers are looking for?
-
About the said company, projects worked on and scale.
This is in no way a guideline as to what we want your company to present on. The presenter has full autonomy on what they want to present on. The presentations are about 45min long and the time and date of the presentation will be planned around the availability of the presenter. Our HOD, Mr Cronje Bruwer, has assured us he will move the timetable around should you agree to come present.
Should you agree to present, please supply us with the following for the monthly “Civilian Newsletter” published in our department:-
-
Write up on your company.
-
Write up on the presenter.
-
Brochures or Pamphlets for students. (+/- 100)
We also provide catering for lecturers and students during the talks as this always helps pull in crowds. The students receive small lunch packs and we serve platters for lecturers and presenters during a 20 min networking session after presentations. Since the Civil Engineering Forum is a voluntary organisation, we work on donations from the department, the SRC and the company presenting to provide the refreshments. However please note, you are under no obligation to provide refreshments. Your presence will be more than enough.
Photos will be taken during the event and published on our Forum website and in the SAICE Civil Engineering Magazine that goes out to +/- 12 000 members of SAICE. We advise companies bring banners and branding material for this regard. Please check out our website on http://ujdfccivilforum.wix.com/uj-civil-eng-forum for further details.
